It’s pretty simple – the market is going up and has been since last October. Many of you are concerned about all that is happening around us and wonder how that can be. That is hard to explain. The simple answer is the market does what it wants to do and owes us no explanation. We can try to outsmart and fight the market (no way to win that one) or listen and accept the simple answer.

Dave Mason, an English singer-songwriter and guitarist, was a co-founder of the super group, Traffic, and entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. He also recorded albums with Mama Cass (has anyone ever listened to one?) and has enjoyed a long, successful solo career. He still tours and performs.

Market metrics are mostly positive. We have allocated portfolios accordingly. A steady drumbeat of disconcerting news continues and many of you are worried. Prudent Retiree shares your concerns and expects continued bursts of volatility. Our discipline is always to listen to the market. The market’s message now is to be invested. It is hard to explain how the market seems to fly in the face of all that seems wrong, but the market’s response to events is what matters. We will continue to monitor risk and be flexible in our decision making.

Mason had another hit song titled, “Feelin’ Alright.” The refrain lyric is, “feelin’ alright, not feelin’ too good myself.” That pretty well describes our market outlook. We’ll feel alright on up days, but not too good on down days when the news is bad. Up, down, but overall trending higher.
