“What’s Going On”

            - Marvin Gaye

Marvin Gaye was a monumental presence in Motown and rhythm and blues music during the 1960s and 70s. Those of us of a certain age enjoyed (and still do) his beautiful music. “What’s Going On” hit the airwaves almost fifty years ago and made it to number one. The song expressed Marvin Gaye’s anguish about America’s social and political unrest.

What’s going on in our country today? Sadly, today is much like it was fifty years ago. The internet has not changed how we treat one another. Perhaps social media has made it worse. The ugly political rancor is palpable. Military conflict is still ongoing far from home. Many judge and hate others because they think, believe and vote differently. What’s going on?

As investors, we are fortunate that the market seems to be oblivious to what is going on in politics and society. What’s going on in the economy is outstanding and the market is responding in kind. It’s difficult to reconcile at times, but keep listening to the market. Stay focused on low interest rates, a strong economy and full employment.

Marvin sang “Oh, you know we’ve got to find a way to bring some understanding here today.” Hope, but don’t bet on that. Remain invested as you are and continue to listen to what the market tells us is going on.
