January is the month we pause to remember and honor the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. His life and his vision made a transformational difference for good in our nation. His courage in a time of violent upheaval set us on a better path. He gave his life for the values and cause he championed.

When Dr. King spoke the words, “lightning makes no sound until it strikes,” he was referring to the urgency of the Civil Rights Movement. Complacency, ignorance and willful racism would no longer stand.

Recent events and the endless turmoil in our government have led to worried questions about the markets. “Will stock prices crash? Will I lose money?” Basic concerns. Right now, stock markets are moving strongly higher, but what if?

No one knows for certain. The only reliable strategy is to focus on risk management and listen to what the market is saying. Low inflation, low interest rates and low unemployment are underpinning a strong economy. The market is responding favorably. When will this change? Don’t guess, don’t predict, listen—the market will tell you when. As Dr. King said, “lightning makes no sound until it strikes.”

Remain invested as you are. Listen carefully to the market, focus on risk and you’ll hear the sound of the market change. Prudent Retiree wishes all a great 2020.
