The Prudent Retiree - What's Going On Part XIV

The Beatles. We all know them. “All You Need is Love” was one of their chart toppers. It was recorded in 1967 during the Summer of Love. Hippies reigned supreme.  

Nothing you can know that isn’t known. Certainly that is the situation with COVID-19 and it’s impact on the economy and the market. Reopen or stay home? That is the challenge for our nation. The answer is literally one of life or death, economic recovery or depression. Politicians don’t agree and all of us have opinions. It truly is a balance between medical and economic health.  

The Beatles sang “All you need is love,” but it will probably take more than that to recover from COVID-19. Our concern is the health of your portfolio. Nothing you can know that isn’t known. In truth, the full impact of the virus and the absolute best way to respond isn’t known. We believe the only prudent course is to listen to the market. Right now, the market is telling us to stay invested as you are. We know that seems to run counter to the unsettling mortality and economic numbers. Yet the market has risen 30% in the past six weeks. The market has responded favorably to support from the Fed, the President and Congress.  

Prudent Retiree certainly does not ignore the risk. Although there has been brutal volatility the past 3 months, this year’s pull back lines up with normal market corrections. Not a catastrophe. There will come a time when the economy will catch up with the market or the market will fall back to the economy. We won’t predict which and will follow what the market tells us. We can’t know the unknown. We know the market is currently in an uptrend. We continuously monitor risk and will suggest change when the market dictates. Remember, all those on television and the radio don’t know either.
