The Prudent Retiree - March 2019
“One thing is clear to me: We, as human beings, must be willing to accept people who are different from ourselves.”
- Barbara Jordan
How different would our civil discourse be today if politicians and others lined up with that way of thinking? Would the horror in New Zealand have happened? What about the other senseless violence we’ve experienced? Imagine the President and Congress working together to do the peoples’ business. You probably can’t.
March is National Women’s Month. We celebrate the accomplishments of all women. Barbara Jordan was the first African American woman elected to the Texas state legislature and then the first southern African American woman elected to the US House of Representatives. She was a leader in the Civil Rights movement and a courageous role model for American women. When Ms. Jordan was elected to Congress in 1972, few imagined that we would have an African American President. President Obama served eight years. Few believed there would be a woman President. That seems to be just a matter of time. Barbara Jordan was a true trailblazer.
The market continues in an uptrend. The economy seems solid, inflation and interest rates are relatively low. There will always be times of volatility, but Prudent Retiree expects the market to move higher. Remain invested.
My grandson Luke is almost three months old. He is a true joy. I hope that he grows up in the world of acceptance imagined by Barbara Jordan.
