The Prudent Retiree - November 2018

“We don’t know.”

          - SpongeBob and Patrick

Perhaps you’ve watched the sublime cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants with children or grandchildren. I have. Perhaps on your own, though you don’t have to admit that.

In one memorable episode, SpongeBob and his friend Patrick are mindlessly playing, making a racket in their dyspeptic friend Squidward’s yard. Squidward angrily throws open his window and yells “What are you doing?” SpongeBob and Patrick look blankly at one another and together yell “We don’t know.”

SpongeBob and Patrick should be interviewed about the market on CNBC or Bloomberg. They don’t know and we don’t know. The market has been getting pummeled for the past six weeks. Is this a normal cyclical correction or the start of a major, prolonged down turn? Think 2008.

No one knows for certain and we don’t live in a pineapple under the sea. Prudent Retiree currently believes we are just in a correction that will stabilize. We are concerned, but don’t believe recent market declines are the start of a crash. We try not to be mindless, though, and acknowledge that all market crashes start with a correction. We monitor our risk management parameters daily and will recommend change if indicated.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving feast, family, and friends. If you have a moment, enjoy an episode of SpongeBob and the gang.
