One of the most famous and repeated lines in the history of theater. I’ve never seen the play, but watched Alfalfa recite the line on The Little Rascals more than once. William Shakespeare, renowned playwright and sage market commentator. Alfalfa, well he’s Alfalfa.

Seriously, the question is to be or not to be in the market. Stocks have been extremely volatile all year. At the moment, we are mired in a trading range and it’s hard to know which way we will break. Prudent Retiree always encourages investors to listen to the market. The market is telling us to expect continued up-and-down volatility. Choppy markets are frustrating and cause investors to share Hamlet’s indecision. “Alas, poor Yorick.” The endless stream of negative news leads to market anxiety. Causes for concern are not going to end—the election draws near, inflation continues, interest rates are moving up, the war in Ukraine grinds on and fall could bring another Covid spike. All worrisome. Prudent Retiree will stay focused on how the market responds. No predictions.

To be or not to be. The answer is both. Our qualified portfolios are currently 50% in equities and 50% in cash. That will remain our answer to the question until the market says otherwise. As always, we want to avoid large losses and preserve your income. We don’t want your portfolios to end up like Hamlet—dead.
