The Prudent Retiree - July 14, 2022

Well, investors sure have the come and go blues. 2022 has unfortunately been all go. The bright spot is the outstanding performance of the market from 2019-2021. Even with the miserable action this year, the past three and a half years have provided solid returns. Our clients have experienced more come than go and that is what matters.

Prudent Retiree couldn’t even begin to count all the hours I’ve spent listening to the Allman Brothers in the past fifty years. The band experienced numerous tragedies, but always hit the road and delighted their fans. A never-ending argument in my family is who is the greatest slide player—Duane or Derek? “Round ‘n’ round, round we go.”

Where is the market going? “I don’t know. I can’t say, as I can’t see” the future. The market, the economy, the country and the world are all going through a rough patch. Last month, inflation topped 9%, the highest in more than forty years. Greg Allman sang, “you got me feeling like a fool.” Fed Chairman Powell and Treasury Secretary Yellen most likely feel the same. Prudent Retiree wishes we had responded differently, but we’re thankful we went to a 50% cash position in qualified accounts earlier in the year. That helped to significantly reduce the damage.

I don’t know how events will continue to unfold. Inflation is bad, but the economy continues to do well. People that want to work are working. Expect volatility to continue and the come and go blues to be with us for a time. Since we can’t see, we believe the best allocation remains 50/50. The song says: “Seems to me, that I once heard that everything is finally cured by time.” That has always been the way of the market. Prudent Retiree will do what we can do to keep you off the Whippin’ Post.
