The Prudent Retiree - May 27, 2022
The market is up, the market is down. There is an endless stream of crushing bad news, there is a glimmer of hope. We certainly live in unsettled times. This has been a rough year for stock and bond investors. Values are down across the board. You know the litany of bad news so Prudent Retiree won’t repeat it.
Jackson Browne is one of our generation’s great singer-songwriters. His lyrics tend to be poignant and are especially meaningful in our fraught times. “A Little Soon to Say” is at once accepting of current reality and anxiously hopeful about the future. You could characterize it as bruised, but not broken.
Bruised, but not broken sums up the economy and the markets. We are in a moment where it is easy for an investor to capitulate to fear. Most of what we hear and read is negative. Prudent Retire has often said that bad news sells papers. It’s best for investors to focus only on market metrics. Our risk management model has weakened and the market is telling us to be cautious. Our current allocation for qualified portfolios is 50% equity and 50% cash equivalents. We don’t at this time believe a 2008 market crash is imminent. We still believe this to be a “normal” market cycle correction. We continuously monitor market risk and will make changes when warranted. Flexibility is called for.
Is the market slide over—will it get worse or will it get better? It’s just a little soon to say.
