The horror in Ukraine is at the top of investor concerns. President Biden was right when he said this is Putin’s war. Successive Presidents—Bush, Obama, Trump, Biden—have tried to deal with Putin in a constructive way. All of them ultimately came up short. It wouldn’t have made any difference what they did. Putin is a megalomaniac obsessed with his own power and determined to remake the world as it was before the end of the Cold War. He has no reservations about assassinating individuals or invading sovereign nations and killing innocents. First it was Chechnya, then Georgia, Kazakhstan and now Ukraine. He has disrupted and destroyed to satisfy his madness.

You are concerned about the volatility the war in Ukraine has caused in the market. You wonder if it will cause a major crash. Certainly, the spike in oil prices and disruption of the global supply chain is not good. The market, though, has stood up relatively well up to this point. It seems that the war hasn’t really made a difference. That is the way of the market. Investors just cannot presume a cause and effect on stock prices. Ukraine is a human tragedy, but not, up to this point, a market tragedy.
