The Prudent Retiree - February 8, 2022

No words. Just the mournful anguish of John Coltrane’s tenor saxophone. He recorded “Alabama” on November 18th, 1963. It was his eulogy for the young girls who had been murdered two months earlier in Birmingham, Alabama. The Ku Klux Klan bombed the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church when the girls were there. Martin Luther King used words to deliver his powerful eulogy. Coltrane used the power of his horn. This tragedy sparked the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Americans of all races were horrified; eyes were opened and attitudes changed.

John Coltrane is the greatest of all jazz saxophonists. His recording, A Love Supreme, is considered by many to be the penultimate jazz album. His music is mesmerizing and compelling. He died at age forty, an unrivaled jazz legend. I never saw John Coltrane play, but I have a large collection of his recordings. His son, Ravi, a great player in his own right, continues the legacy. I have tickets to hear Ravi play at Birdland in April. His music is his own, but the sound of his tenor evokes memories of his father.

No words. We hear so many words about the market. Predictions abound. You can read, hear, or watch investment commentary at any time. The never ending stream of words can be compelling and confusing. One of the keys to successful investing is no words. Listen to the rhythm of the market and it will tell you both where it is and where it is going. The market is in a correction, but overall, metrics remain positive. It is best to maintain your current allocations. Sit back, relax, and turn on some Coltrane.
