The Prudent Retiree - July 28, 2021
Those of you who have read the Prudent Retiree over the years, know that I’m a decades long fan of the Grateful Dead. Jerry Garcia’s guitar never fails to capture me. There is no better road trip music—the only music that played on our trip to Michigan and back.
The Dead’s songs are chock-full of investment wisdom. Thinking a lot about less and less. A seeming contradiction at first glance, but I don’t think so. Trying to make sense of all the information and predictions about the market is like standing under Niagara Falls and trying to stay dry. Impossible. If you listen to every market maven, you’ll be overwhelmed and confused.
Better to listen a lot to less and less. Just listen to the market. The past two years have been a harrowing time for America and the world. The sharp divergence of news and opinion has made it especially easy to make investment mistakes. Concentrate on the market itself. Events can be fraught and cause us to react. All that really matters for investors is the market’s perspective on events. Less and less. Market metrics remain positive. We spend a lot of time monitoring potential risks and encourage you to maintain current equity allocations.
Following anything other than the market is a distraction. That is why Prudent Retiree is thinking a lot about less and less and listening to the Grateful Dead.
