“It’s Always Something.”

Roseanne Roseannadanna (Gilda Radner)

Gilda Radner, a comedic genius, was an original cast member on Saturday Night Live. Radner portrayed her Roseanne character to comment on current affairs and in the news celebrities. She would start to answer a question and then digress completely off topic with bizarre, hilarious anecdotes. Her foil, Jane Curtin, would stop her and angrily ask what Roseanne’s rambling had to do with the original question. Her answer; “It’s always something—if it’s not one thing, it’s another.”

We seem to be experiencing a Roseanne Roseannadanna market. The pandemic, competition with China, ongoing political turmoil, online trading speculation and now fear of inflation are causes for alarm. If it’s not one thing, it’s another to worry about. Will the market crash? Many of you are concerned and have questions about what to do.

Our answer is always listen to the market. It indeed is always something and potential market risk is ever present. Prudent Retiree advocates following how the market responds to news and events. It is best not to react to the news of the day. Market metrics remain positive in spite of the current “something”—inflation. Maintain your equity allocations until the market says otherwise.

I enjoyed watching Gild Radner. She was brilliant and I could still stay up that late. The frat house television was always tuned into Saturday Night Live. Gilda died tragically at 42. She was one of the best. Investors need to remember the wisdom of Roseanne Roseannadanna—it’s always something and success comes from listening to the market.
