The Prudent Retiree - April 22, 2021
This song was first performed by the British rock band, Ten Years After, fifty years ago. We were in a moment similar to now—economic angst, war, violence and social upheaval. Politics was ugly. There were many reasons to think the country and markets would unravel. The Dow Jones was about 800.
Our nation is again in a fraught moment for reasons known to all. The past year will go down in the history books as a wrenching time for America. Many are worried that all the turmoil will cause the market to crash. Many expected that to happen in 1971. Today the Dow is over 30,000.
If you saw the movie Woodstock, you’ll remember the scintillating performance by Alvin Lee and Ten Years After. Mind blowing guitar solo. If you follow politics, you know someone always wants to tax the rich to feed the poor. Who are the rich? Who are the poor? That’s for another forum.
Market metrics and our risk management model are positive. A reopening of the economy, vaccines and Fed policy continue to bode well for stock prices. Prudent Retiree believes that equity allocation should be fully invested. As always, we respect uncertainty and monitor potential risks. There will be short term volatility. We will call for change when the market dictates.
Here’s a question for all investors—what would happen if there were no rich, no more?
