The Prudent Retiree - December 2021

The Beatles have been here, there and everywhere recently. The just released documentary has put them back in our living rooms. A little different than the excitement of their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show 58 years ago, but seeing them makes it seem like yesterday.

“Hello, Goodbye” was released in 1967, the year when all you needed was love. It is a song about disagreement. My wife and I disagree—she loves it and I think it spoils the party. The Beatles surely never thought they were describing the state of the market when they sing, “Hello, Goodbye.” Bulls say yes, bears say no.

Let’s get back to today. There is strong disagreement about the market. Compelling arguments are made by bulls and bears about what happens next. Do you want to know a secret? Only the market itself knows where it is headed. The world seems to be helter skelter and it’s easy to be worried. That is why we listen to the market. Listening is how to stay out of trouble and feel fine about our investment allocations. Beware of pundits who speak in absolutes about the market. You can’t do that.

Though tomorrow never knows, market metrics have come together to indicate continued growth. Maintain your current positions.

Some of you have just enjoyed a Happy Hanukkah. We wish others a Merry Christmas and all a Happy New Year.
