The Prudent Retiree - October 27, 2021
Richard Thompson is a long time favorite of the Prudent Retiree. He is a virtuoso guitarist and poignant songwriter. I first heard him in the early 70s and he has been recording and touring for more than fifty years.
Thompson’s songs usually evoke sadness and despair. “Take Care The Road You Choose” is a lament about regret over choices made. Ok, what does this have to do with the market? Last month, the market had a correction of about 5%. Correction, not crash. Corrections happen regularly for various reasons. You cannot invest in stocks and be unwilling to experience corrections. Last month, the news was bad about politics, inflation, China, etc. This month the market is making new all-time highs. It was a short-term correction, not a crash. There is always bad news. What matters is market metrics and they are positive.
I spoke with many of you who were concerned that a 2008 crash was upon us. Not likely at this point. We are always concerned, but our risk management model remains positive and we encourage you to maintain your equity allocations. Take care the road you choose. The road we choose is the market’s. The wrong road can be costly.
We don’t predict or listen to the opinions of strident commentators with an agenda. Prudent Retiree’s job is to listen to the market and work to avoid large losses. That is the road we choose.
