The Prudent Retiree - What's Going On Part XXVIII

Satchel Paige, the greatest Negro League pitcher, was denied a chance to pitch in the Major Leagues during his prime. Baseball excluded black players, but Paige routinely bested the top white stars when they played exhibition games. Legend has it that Paige would occasionally tell his defense to stay in the dugout and proceed to strike out the side. He finally made it to the Major Leagues in 1948 after the so-called color barrier was lifted. He signed with the Cleveland Indians (Prudent Retiree’s favorite team) at age 42 and helped them win the World Series with a stellar 6-1 record. He was the first African American to pitch in the World Series.

The Negro League Committee selected Paige as the first player from the Negro League to be enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Paige’s simple yet powerful philosophy of keeping the ball away from the bat is much like our risk management strategy. We simply want to avoid large losses. If investors are able to do that, they will be successful.

The market remains in an uptrend. Baseball is being played without fans. COVID-19 is still rampant and many businesses are still struggling. Many are closing. The economy is not operating on all cylinders and there are severe challenges for workers with childcare. There is heated debate about opening schools and many states are slowing down reopening. Oh yeah, there is also the small matter of a highly contentious election coming up. Will the Post Office get the job done? Will the vote be suppressed? You get the point. There seems to be greater cause for worry than for enthusiasm.

So keep it simple—listen only to what the market is saying. Don’t over analyze or try to predict. Continue with current equity allocations. Prudent Retiree will continue to monitor the risks and let you know when conditions change.

Satchel also said, “Don’t look behind you, cause something might be gaining on you.”

That is what’s going on.
