The Prudent Retiree - What's Going On Part V
Fear continues to rule the financial markets. Coronavirus. Oil prices. Scary. Stock prices have dropped significantly in the past month. Remember the market made it’s all time on February 19th. That was less than a month ago. Last year the market was up more than 25%. As of last Friday, the S&P 500 was down 8% year to date.
Corrections are a normal part of investing. They can’t be avoided unless you don’t invest in the stock market. Banks will gladly take your money and pay you essentially nothing. Can you live on that? Though the market goes down on occasion, it has certainly out performed the bank over time.
What do we do now? Prudent Retiree is reminded of a song— “Ridin’ the Storm Out” by REO Speedwagon. The song was a top hit in 1973. I’m sure many of you know the lyrics. The inflation rate is low, interest rates appear to be heading to zero and the economy is sound. We believe this is a market correction, not a crash and we should follow the lead of REO and ride this one out.
