The Prudent Retiree - September 2019

“Vote for me and I’ll set you free.”

- “Ball of Confusion” by The Temptations

I heard the song “Ball of Confusion” by The Temptations as I drove home from work yesterday. The song was released in 1970. As I listened to the lyrics, it was sadly apparent how little has changed in the past fifty years. The Temptations, giants of the Motown sound, were spot on with their cultural observations. Politicians promising free stuff. Politicians say more taxes will solve everything. Revolution, gun control, the sale of pills at an all time high. Fear in the air, tension everywhere, and the beat goes on. The world was a ball of confusion in 1970, it still is in 2019.

Those of us who first heard that song in 1970 aren’t surprised by today’s political chaos. Think of all the bills passed, all the money spent, all the lives lost. Fifty years ago the population explosion was going to end life as we know it. You can look that up. Today, climate change is the imminent threat. Yet, the band plays on.

What’s the point? The Temptations released “Ball of Confusion” on May 7, 1970. The Dow Jones closed at 723.07. Yesterday, when I heard The Temptations, the Dow Jones closed at 27,177. The ten year treasury rate in May 1970 was 7.83%. Today, it’s 1.52%. Stay invested according to your risk profile. Vote for (your pick) and he or she will set you free.
