The Prudent Retiree - September 2019

“I have become comfortably numb.”

          - “Comfortably Numb” by Pink Floyd

Scandal. Scandal. Scandal. Imagine being a newsboy on the corner long ago screaming “Read all about it.” Now you can just tweet it. Media outlets look at the same facts. Some interpret them as heroic, others as evidence of derangement. Stab them in the back. Oh, and please buy my book.

The economy is booming. Employment is at record levels and there are more jobs than people to fill them. That’s pretty good. Yet, tariffs and economic collapse are on the way.

Chaos and partisanship are rampant. Liar, cheater, thief. Investigate, impeach prosecute. Vote for the good guy.

Pink Floyd is a British rock band that filled stadiums in the 1970s. In the song, “Comfortably Numb”, the band sings that it can’t explain and that we would not understand anyway. That sentiment pretty much sums up the inability of conventional analysis to account for the current market.

“Comfortably Numb” was written during a dark time in British politics. Anger and class warfare were prevalent. The song’s protagonist finally just accepts things as they are. He gives up, he becomes comfortably numb.

Prudent Retiree believes that Pink Floyd’s perspective—accept things as they are—is the right way for investors to deal with our current market. It continues upward. Investors should employ sound risk management and numb themselves to everything but the market itself.

Pink Floyd’s magnum opus was The Wall. We’ll save that for another day.
