The Prudent Retiree - June 2018

“She can take the dark out of the nighttime.”

          - “She Belongs to Me” by Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan is America’s inscrutable poet laureate. He has been on the road performing non–stop for almost sixty years. His songs speak to America’s spirit and struggle. Dylan has influenced generations and is the only rock star awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The stock market seems to often reflect the mood of our nation. We worry about politics, terrorism, nuclear weapons, who gets elected, Lebron – the list goes on and on. Daily news headlines appear to cause up and down gyrations in stock prices. Greed, fear and panic are eternal.

Of course we want the market to just move higher. If it’s true that stocks go up in the long run, why bother with down days? Well, perhaps the lady can take the dark out of nighttime, but she can’t take volatility out of the market. Prices will go up and down.

You can’t avoid the dark or the downside. Dylan also wrote that the lady in question will have you on your knees. Solid risk management can help you avoid large losses and keep your retirement portfolio standing upright.

Let’s hope that Bob Dylan has decades more on the road. We’ll continue to work our hardest to make sure you have money to buy tickets. Enjoy your summer.
