The Prudent Retiree - April 2017

“If you break it, you buy it.”

          -Traditional Retail Warning.

It seems like a long time since things have gone well. Dot Com Crash, The Great Recession, Income Inequality, Social and Racial Strife, 9/11, Terrorism, Afghanistan, Iraq, WMD’s, Bin Laden, The Surge, North Korea, Benghazi, Leading From Behind, Strategic Patience, MOAB, Affordable Care, Affordable Care Repeal, the Tea Party, Occupy Wall Street, Hillary’s E-mails, Trump’s Taxes, the Russians, Iran, Syria, Islamic State- I can go on and on, but you get the point. How about that 21st century.

If it’s your idea and it doesn’t work, you are the bad guy. If I’m the least bit inconvenienced, you are the bad guy. You broke it, you bought it, you pay. Is this how to operate or govern?

Let’s take Iraq as an example- attack, surge, withdraw, lead from behind. Nothing really worked and we wind up with ISIS. Lack of consistent policy leads to a mess.

It is easy to be worried, confused and angry. The market shares none of our emotions. The next time you think bad news should cause it to drop, remember that the market moves on its own schedule. For now, the trend is up and you should be fully invested consistent with your risk tolerance. There will come a time when the outlook is rosy and the news is good. Perhaps that is when you should worry.
