The Prudent Retiree - March 2017
“It’s a big old goofy world.”
Last week my grandson Beau was born. I also saw the great American singer/songwriter John Prine in concert. He performed one of his oldies but goodies- It’s a Big Old Goofy World. It is! Beau is entering this world at a time when things seem out of control. Terrorism, wars, economic and political strife, social unrest and just simple ugliness all seem to be the order of the day. I couldn’t be happier, though, to have Beau.
I don’t believe that President Trump is a reincarnation of Hitler any more than President Obama was a communist who wasn’t born in this country. It is a big old goofy world.
I’ve spent much of my life studying history. The French Revolution comes to mind. There are those who are really hurting and some like Marie Antoinette would say, “Let them eat cake”. There are others who would send all those who have been successful and contribute to charity to the guillotine because of their success. “Off with their heads”.
No one listens. There is no civility. Progressive groups that promote tolerance and diversity disrupt and threaten those who see things differently. These self-proclaimed arbiters of free speech shut down any voice that disagrees. There are also those who fear and hate any difference. Let’s not help or lend a hand to anyone that doesn’t look like me.
No more great American melting pot. Or so it seems. Yet, our country moves forward. New business starts up and jobs are created. Compassionate Americans contribute record amounts to charity. The economy grows and the market moves higher. Somehow, we survive the chaos.
I don’t know that anyone can write a formula for how America manages to work. It does, though. John Prine said: “Kiss a little baby, Give the world a smile, If you take an inch, Give ‘em back a mile.”
Welcome to this big old goofy world, Beau.
