The Prudent Retiree - August 2016
“A difference in opinion is what makes a horse race.”
Samuel Clemens, who wrote as Mark Twain, was one of our great authors and a keen observer of our behavior and foibles. He could certainly have been discussing the 2016 presidential election. Many of you have asked- “Is this the best we can do?” Maybe, maybe not, but these are the choices we have.
The names are well known. The Donald and Hillary. Trump and Clinton. Both evoke strong feelings- mostly disgust it seems. Depending on who is speaking, they are crooks, lunatics, corrupt, liars, threats to our very way of life.
Prudent Retiree does not know what to make of it all. We are asked daily how the election result will impact the markets. The truth is no one really knows. You will, however, read and hear pundits by the score tell you what the outcome will be and how said outcome will affect your life and investments. We can only recite some general historic results. According to Global Financial Data, Inc., when a Republican wins a first term, the market has increased by an average of 18.8% the next year. When a Democrat wins a first term the market has decreased an average 2.7% the next year.
Now you know. However, there has never been a woman president and many wonder if Trump is really a Republican. As Mark Twain also said, “Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.”
