The Prudent Retiree - July 2016
“Your best teacher is your last mistake."
Ralph Nader is a controversial consumer advocate whose efforts have brought about change. He was the Green Party candidate for president in 2000. Many speculate that votes he won in Florida enabled George W. Bush to win that state and the presidency.
In his zeal, Nader at times over reached and did more to harm his cause than help. He would then recalibrate and renew his efforts. One of those people in American history who is both loved and loathed.
No approach to investing is perfect. Staying fully invested at all times will expose you to huge declines like those of the market crashes in 2008 and 2000.
Prudent Retiree always seeks to avoid 2008 size declines. Those are potentially life changing. The trade-off at times is getting whipsawed in a choppy market, like we’ve experienced in the past fourteen months. Not fun, but not life-changing.
Where do we stand now? Stock index prices have broken out above their May 2015 high. This is often a positive indicator. The Fed continues a near zero investment rate policy. Our risk management model is positive.
